Anne Applegate began her musical teaching career at East High School in Febuary of 1969. Within five years, choral music at East was thriving due to her excellent ability and her superb rapport with her students, who wanted to succeed under her direction. For twenty five years Applegate conducted and developed the Acapella Choir, Madrigals, Women's Ensemble, Men's Barbershop, Junior Acapella Choir, and the Men's and Women's Choruses. Under her leadership East High School was one of the leaders in the choral world.

Anne Applegate taught with a firm style, demanding excellence, and developed the musianship of her students' musical talents. Her students knew that she cared about them. Her students enjoyed being part of a strong choral tradition and she was able to create opportunities for everyone to be apart of this tradition. She instilled in her students the pride in being part of something truly special.

The Anne Applegate award is the highest award that East High School can bestow upon a choral student. The recipient is chosen by the music department and is given in celebration to the student who exemplifies superior musicianship, outstanding dedication, and a love of music.
